Use of feature code 3124 and 3125 for pSeries/Rs6000 serial cables
02/23/2009
Multiple serial cables are available in the market and many of them are used in conjunction with each other. Sometimes other serial cables are deployed to enhance the workability of the used pseries cables. For instance 3124 and 3125 serial cables are mostly used for providing the heartbeat connecting a couple of pSeries/RS6000. The configuration is particularly useful in HACMP environments.
There are however, differences in the functionalities of the 3124 and 3125. The 3124 serial port cable is used for drawer/drawer. It provides you with a 3.7 null-modem connection that creates the required communication between the serial ports. Such communication could be integrated or you may use an asynchronous adapter on both the systems.
3125 on the other hand is the serial port cable used for the rack/rack. Though the features are similar to that of the 3124, the length is around 8 meters. Owing to such length it is mostly used to join two rack-mount systems. You can also join two systems that are housed in divergent racks. Even the systems that are not rack mountable can be joined with this feature code.
Both these cables provide you with a DB25 female connector at either end. While attaching them to any integrated serial port having 9pins, you will require using a converter that can convert the 9 pin to 25 pins.
